Prioritise Dengue Fever Prevention

Where is dengue prevalent?

The risk of dengue is now present in more than 125 countries worldwide.[1]

Although actual numbers of dengue cases are thought to be underreported,[1] both the numbers of dengue cases and the areas where dengue is prevalent are increasing worldwide, which poses a significant global public health challenge. [1,2,3] Discover the prevalence of dengue in this short video.

Raising awareness about the risks of dengue when travelling to endemic regions is important to help protect travellers and to try to limit the re-emergence of vector-borne diseases in Europe. [4]

Did you know?

Before 1930, dengue fever was endemic in southern Europe and affected more than a million people between 1927–1928. [4] However, between 1960–2000, there were only single incidental or sporadic reports of A. aegypti in Italy, Israel, and Turkey.[5]

Now, after many years with few cases reported, dengue is back in Europe. [4,6]

Since the first autochthonous outbreak was reported in 2010, there have been more than 20 outbreaks in mainland Europe, the largest occurring in Italy in 2020 (11 cases).[7]
